We began October 2013, when the government offered the first Green Deal initiative, launched 28 January 2013. Our assessor carried out one of the first assessments live on TV for Sky News, a flat in Westminster, London. During the first year of trading, the company was awarded the South East Region, Green Deal & ECO Assessor Award 2014.
GDA-Kent continue to work with property owners, architects and builders, helping to promote more energy conscience designs and constructions. We have used our own property (which was a ‘G1’ energy rating when purchased in September 2013), as an example to show what can be done with an older property. By the way, a ‘G1’ is very low, meaning the walls were leaking and absorbing heat, the carbon loss was enormous and it would have been expensive to keep warm in winter. Some dwellings are so poorly insulated that their energy rates are below G, they are off the scale! They lack any insulation, leak heat (carbon) and are very cold in winter and hot in the summer!
Since acquiring our property, we have gradually made improvements. We have reduced our property’s carbon footprint by applying full insulation to all walls externally, installing renewable energy heating, a biomass boiler as we are off the gas grid. We also generate most of our electricity (especially during the summer months), which saves money on fuel bills and energy management is constantly monitored. The house is now rated as a 'C' 69, not bad for a rural dwelling built circa 1895.
As we live and work in Kent, our ideology is to stay local and support our client's needs. This in turn, creates an ongoing revolving system providing services to and for the local communities where we live and serve. So in this small way, we believe it is vital to keep trying to reduce our carbon footprint even further.
Change of direction
During March 2016, the government cut all Green Deal funding. Meaning that home owners and landlords could no long receive grants to improve or bring their properties up to satisfactory standards. As a company, we retrained to offer SAP and Water Calculations, we also changed our ‘trading as’ name to Green Development Assessors Kent (GDA-Kent) in line with government policy. We used to trade as: ‘Green Deal Assessments Kent’, which is still our registered company name and has not altered.
